Hornets and Tigers play to 2-2 draw

September 18, 2022-For the second Sunday in a row Emporia State and Fort Hays State played to a draw as the teams finished tied 2-2 in Hays, Kan. to open MIAA play.

The Hornets got on the board first just over eight minutes into the match.  Joanie Westcoat delivered a corner kick right in front of the goal and Hannah Woolery headed it in to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers evened things in the 14th minute on a corner kick of their own.  Sullivan Kelly placed the ball in the back side of the goal and Hannah Mares was able to get her head on it to put in the goal to make it 1-1.

Fort Hays State took their first lead of the season against Emporia State in the 23rd minute. Mares took a shot from the left side that Hornet keeper Mackenzi Goen was able to block. Emily Hutchings chased down the loose ball and took a shot of her own that Goen was able to again block, but Montserrat Diaz was in position to put the rebound into the net to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Emporia State tied the score with just under 14 minutes left in the half.  Asta Kristindottir's throw in made it past the Tiger defenders to Rhea Bailey who sent it back to Woolery.  She took one step and powered it into the net for her second goal and what would be the final score of the match.

The Hornets would outshoot the Tigers 8-2 in the second half and recorded the only corner after intermission but could not get the go ahead goal.
