HORNETS FALL TO #2 ICHABODS ON TUESDAY NIGHT

Emporia State defeated in three sets by second-ranked Washburn

September 13, 2022 - Emporia State played host to the Turnpike Tussle and #2 Washburn from White Auditorium on Tuesday night in a match that the Ichabods took in three sets.

In the first set, the Hornets jumped on the Ichabods quickly with a 9-4 lead with a trio of kills coming from Winny Harris in the middle. After an Ichabod timeout, Washburn trimmed the deficit to 14-11 midway through the set before a large run gave the Ichabods the lead they would not relinquish. After nine straight points, Washburn kept the pressure on and took the first set 25-16 over Emporia State.

The beginning of the second set was different from the first as Washburn scored five of the first six points. The Hornets would not allow the Ichabods to pull away as they made it difficult throughout the set. While limiting the Ichabods from building on their lead, the Hornets were unable to close the gap as Washburn went on to capture the second set 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Emporia State battled Washburn through the first half of the third set, including holding a 13-12 lead at the halfway point. A few points later, after a Winny Harris kill tied the score at 14-14, Washburn rallied to score 11 of the next 14 points to close out the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Winny Harris led the Hornets in kills through the middle with eight on just 11 attacks to hit .636 on the night. Shelby Ebert and Zuzanna Buchnajzer each recorded seven kills of their own. Ainslee Stepp recorded 16 assists with Riley Bernskoetter recording 13 at the setter position. Leah Mach led the way in defense with 13 digs.

The Hornets will return to White Auditorium on Friday, September 16 to conclude their homestand as they take on #13 Northwest Missouri. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
