April 19, 2022-Playing their fourth matches in six days both the Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams came up short on the road at Southwestern College on Tuesday afternoon. The Hornet men lost 4-3 while the women fell 5-2.
Southwestern men 4, ESU 3
The Hornet men started the match on top as
Luiz Maia and
Pablo Caranza won 6-4 at #2 doubles while
Andy Graf and
Jaden Tredway won 6-2 at #3 to give Emporia State the doubles point.
Sergio Vera won 6-3, 6-3 at #3 singles but the Moundbuilders won in straight sets at #1 and #6. The other three matches all went three sets with Tredway coming out on top 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) for the other Hornet point as Southwestern won 4-3.
Southwestern women 5, ESU 2
The Emporia State women played without three of their regular players in their 5-2 loss to the Builders. Despite the shake-up, the Hornets led 1-0 after doubles.
Karen Santiago Sanchez and
Kelsie Burr won 6-1 in their first match at #1 doubles all year.
Caroline Henry and
Emma Biggs then won 6-4 at #3 in their first match together this year. Burr was the only Hornet to win in singles competition however as she took a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #4 singles.
Both teams will wrap up the regular season on Friday, April 22 when they travel to Newman. First serve for both MIAA duals is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Riverside Tennis Courts in Wichita, Kan.
