HORNETS RUN RULE HAWKS IN MIDWEEK MATCHUP

Emporia State defeats Rockhurst 10-0; Barton strikes out 10

April 19, 2022 – Emporia State took down Rockhurst 10-0 in a run-rule victory on Tuesday night from Glennen Field.

After three innings without a hit for the Hornets, the lineup came to life in the fourth inning. Blake Carroll started the rally with a bunt single down the third base line followed by Javier Pena being hit by a pitch. TJ Racherbaumer singled into left field and an error allowed Carroll to score on the play. Kadyn Williams then singled up the middle to score Pena and give Emporia State a 2-0 lead. Chandler Bloomer would extend the lead further with an RBI double to left center. After a single from Mason Sturdy to advance Bloomer to third base, a failed pickoff attempt and a throwing error to home resulted in the Hornets taking a 4-0 lead.

Cade Barton, who made his fifth start of the season, allowed a hit in the first inning and then was able to keep the Hawks out of the hit column for the remainder of the game.

The Hornets offense would pick back up in the sixth inning with a five-run frame. With the bases loaded, Sawyer Slayden came to the plate and ripped a line drive single into left field to score two runners. Javier Pena would drive in a run on a fielder's choice before TJ Racherbaumer doubled to left center to drive in two more runs as Emporia State took a 9-0 lead.

In the seventh, the Hornets would make a number of substitutions in the lineup. One substitution was Joe Daneff, who came to the plate in the bottom half of the seventh and drove a ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season to clinch the 10-0 run-rule victory for Emporia State.

On the mound, Cade Barton went 7.0 innings allowing just one hit and striking out 10 batters to record his first win of the season.

At the plate, four Hornets recorded two hits in the game including Mason Sturdy, Blake Carroll and Chandler Bloomer who each went 2-3 in the game. TJ Racherbaumer went 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sawyer Slayden went 1-3 with two RBI in his first start of the season.

Emporia State will travel to St. Joseph, Missouri this weekend for a three-game series against Missouri Western. First pitch on Friday, April 22 is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
