HORNETS TAKE GAME ONE OVER GRIFFONS IN RUN RULE VICTORY

Emporia State defeats Missouri Western 11-0 in seven innings; Kengott holds Griffons scoreless

April 22, 2022 – Emporia State defeats Missouri Western 11-0 in seven innings on Friday afternoon.

The Hornets went straight to work in the first inning with leadoff hitter Sam Chaput singled back up the middle. After a pair of center field flyouts, Chaput stole second base and then advanced to third on an errant throw from the catcher. Chaput would then score on an RBI single from TJ Racherbaumer.

Jared Kengott started on the mound for the Hornets and kept the early momentum for Emporia State by retiring the first three hitters in order.

Both teams would be held scoreless for three innings before the runs returned for the Hornets. In the fifth inning, Mason Sturdy homered to left field for his first career home run to double the Emporia State lead to 2-0.

After another scoreless inning from Kengott in the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets ran rampant over the Griffons in the sixth for nine runs. Chandler Bloomer started the inning with an RBI single to score Racherbaumer. Kadyn Williams would score later in the inning after an error with two outs. An infield single from Sam Chaput loaded the bases for Blake Carroll who then tripled to clear the bases and give the Hornets a 7-0 lead.

Carroll recorded his 14th career double on the play to move into a tie for third place all-time in Emporia State history with Shawn Smith.

Back-to-back RBI hits from Javier Pena and Racherbaumer followed the Carroll triple to tack on two more runs before Bloomer completed the inning with a two-run home run as Emporia State took a commanding 11-0 lead over Missouri Western. Kengott was able to keep the Griffons off the board in the sixth and seventh innings to cap off the run-rule victory for the Hornets.

At the plate, seven different Hornets recorded a hit while Blake Carroll and Chandler Bloomer each recorded three RBI. TJ Racherbaumer went 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Mason Sturdy had a home run and scored twice, and Javier Pena went 1-3 with a walk, RBI and a run scored.

Jared Kengott went 7.0 scoreless innings allowing just three hits to claim his third win of the season.

Emporia State will take on Missouri Western in game two of the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
