KENGOTT DEALS AS HORNETS TAKE GAME TWO OF TURNPIKE TUSSLE

Emporia State defeats Washburn 5-1 to even the series

April 15, 2022 – Emporia State takes down Washburn 5-1 on Friday night from Glennen Field.

Jared Kengott took the mound for Emporia State and was able to take control from the first pitch as he was able to strike out the side in the first inning.

After a pair of scoreless innings from both teams, the Hornets got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the third frame. With two runners in scoring position, a balk from the Ichabod pitcher forced in the first run of the game. The Hornets then drew a pair of walks to load the bases for Dylan Werries. Werries then took four straight pitches outside of the zone as the Emporia State lead doubled to 2-0 over Washburn through three innings.

Two innings later, Emporia State would strike again in the fifth with three more runs. A leadoff double from TJ Racherbaumer forced the Ichabods to go to the bullpen. With one out, Chandler Bloomer came to the plate and after working a full count, doubled into left center to score Racherbaumer and give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Dylan Werries then singled to left field and was followed by a Noah Geekie sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with two outs for Mason Sturdy. Sturdy came through in a full count to score Bloomer and Werries and give Emporia State a 5-0 lead.

In Kengott's final inning of work, the Ichabods pushed across their lone run before Kengott limited the trouble and escaped the inning, completing his seven-inning performance.

The Hornets were unable to score in the final innings, however Braden Meek and Aaron Bechtel pitched the eighth and ninth innings without allowing a run, including Bechtel striking out the side in the ninth inning to complete the Hornet victory.

Jared Kengott went 7.0 innings allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out seven batters. Braden Meek and Aaron Bechtel each recorded one scoreless inning in relief.

At the plate, TJ Racherbaumer went 2-4 with a double, stolen base and two runs scored. Mason Sturdy went 1-4 with two RBI. Chandler Bloomer and Dylan Werries each recorded an RBI.

Emporia State will take on Washburn in the series finale rubber match of the Turnpike Tussle on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and senior day festivities will take place at 12:30 p.m.
