HORNETS SCORE 17 RUNS IN SPLIT WITH NEWMAN

Emporia State defeated Newman 8-7 in game one; fell 10-9 in game two

March 13, 2022 – Emporia State split their doubleheader with Newman on Sunday, winning game one 8-7 before falling in game two 10-9.

Game 1

After falling behind in the first inning, Harley Sturm responded with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1 through two innings.

The difference for Emporia State came in the third inning as they exploded for seven runs. The inning was highlighted by four different Hornets recorded an RBI, with Alexis Dial driving in a pair on a two RBI double to plate Sturm and Josie Harrison.

A last-gasp rally by Newman was stifled just in time to hold the Jets to only six runs, allowing Emporia State to hold onto the 8-7 victory.

Alexis Dial went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Josie Harrison also went 2-4 from the plate and came in to record the final two outs in the circle and claim her first save of the season.

Game 2

The Hornets found themselves behind through one innings as the Jets pushed across six runs in their first chance at-bat.

Emporia State responded in the second inning with four runs of their own. Brittanie Shepherd laced a two RBI double to left center and was scored on an RBI triple from Abbey Ward.

After Newman pushed four more runs across to take a 10-4 lead, Emporia State attempt to come all the way back with a rally in the sixth inning. The Hornets loaded the bases to begin the sixth inning to bring up Bailey Flewelling. Flewelling drove in two runs with a single to right center. Following the two RBI single, Emma Furnish launched a pinch-hit 3 RBI home run to center field to cut the Newman lead to 10-9.

The Hornets were unable to rally any further and fell in game two 10-9.

Brittanie Shepherd went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Josie Harrison went 2-2 and Emma Furnish went 1-1 with a home run and 3 RBI.

Emporia State will travel to Liberty, Missouri for a midweek doubleheader against William Jewell on Wednesday, March 16. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
