February 5, 2022-With five inches of snow and temperatures in the 30's, the Emporia State tennis programs were able to get their season opening matches in thanks to the indoor courts of the new Kossover Family Tennis Complex. The Hornet men won their MIAA-GAC North Division opener 4-3 over Augustana while the Emporia State women fell 7-0 to the #16 Vikings in non-conference action.
The first action of the day was the women's match and Augustana showed why they are nationally ranked. The Vikings only lost two games as they took all three doubles matches.
Karen Santiago Sanchez had the closest match in singles play, falling 6-4,6-4 to Laura Arce Vieyra at #3 singles.
The Hornet men can say they are in first place in the conference standings after their 4-3 win over the Vikings. Emporia State won all three doubles matches, picking up 6-3 wins at #1 and #2 before taking a 7-6 (7-5) win by
Luiz Maia and
Pablo Caranza at #3 doubles.
Emporia State then took three of the first five singles matches to win the duel. Serfio Vera won 6-3, 6-3 at #4 singles while
Jaden Tredway picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at #5 singles.
Theo Belmonte earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win at #3 singles.
Both teams will be back in action next weekend as they host Tabor. The women will play on Friday, September 11 starting at 4:00 p.m. in the Kossover Complex while first serve for the men will be at 12 noon on Saturday, February 12 at the Kossover Complex.
