February 12, 2022-The Emporia State men's tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 victory over Tabor on Saturday afternoon inside the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
The Hornets swept the doubles competition to go up a point headed into singles play.Â
Theo Belmonte, the reigning MIAA-GAC North Division Player of the Week, and
Sergio Vera won 6-4 at #2 doubles while
Harrison Brown and
Andy Graf picked up a 7-5 victory at #1 to secure the double point.
Luiz Maia and
Jaden Tredway completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at #3.
Three of the single matches went to a third set. Brown won 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 at #1 singles while Maiz fell 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 at #2 to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Graf fell 7-6, 6-2 at #3 to even the dual before Belmonte came from behind to win 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 at #4 as Emporia State took a 3-2 lead into the final two matches. Verga quickly clinched the match with a 6-0,6-1 win at #5 before Tredway put the finishing touches on the win with a 6-2, 7-5 win at #6 singles.
The men are back in action on Wednesday, February 16 when they play host to Bethel. First serve from the Kossover Family Tennis Complex is set for 3:00 p.m.
