EMPORIA STATE MEN GET SEASON SWEEP OF #7 NORTHWEST MISSOURI WITH 76-75 WIN

Brenden Van Dyke has career high 25 points in win

February 21, 2022-Emporia State's Brenden Van Dyke had a career high 25 points including two free throws with 22.9 seconds left as the Hornets defeated #7 Northwest Missouri 76-75 on Monday night in Maryvlle, Mo.  It is the first season sweep of the Bearcats by the Hornets since 2010-11.
 
Northwest jumped out to a 7-3 lead and was up 17-9 with 14:51 left in the first half.  The Bearcats led 20-13 with 12:28 left when Emporia State went on a 12-0 run.  Mayuom Buom started the run and Jumah'Ri Turner ended it with 8:40 left to give the Hornets a 25-20 lead.   The Hornets led 34-28 on Van Dyke's fourth three-pointer of the half.  The Bearcats ended the half on an 8-2 run of their own as the teams went to the locker rooms tied at 36.
 
The second half saw 12 ties and 14 lead changes.  The Hornets got back to back three-pointers from Kaden Evans to take the biggest lead of the half by either team at 55-51 with 9:26 left.  Van Dyke scored inside off a Tray Buchanan assist with 6:53 left to give Emporia State a 59-56 lead.  Wes Dreamer answered with a dunk and then hit a layup with 4:57 left to give the Bearcats a 60-59 lead.  The two teams traded scores over the next 11 possessions. 
 
Trevor Hudgins hit two free throws with 1:16 left to give Northwest a 71-70 lead.  Buchanan was fouled and hit both charities with 1:02 remaining to put the Hornets back up 72-71.  The Bearcats worked the ball and Hudgins layup with 34 seconds left missed and the ball went out of bounds to Emporia State.  Van Dyke was fouled with 22.9 seconds left and hit both free throws to give the Hornets a 74-71 lead.  With seven seconds left Hudgins missed a three and Luke Waters was fouled on the rebound with 3.3 seconds left.  Waters hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. However his miss did not hit rim and Emporia State got the ball on the violation.   The Hornets got the ball in to Buchanan who was fouled with 2.6 seconds left.  He hit both free throws to give Emporia State a 76-72 lead.  Hudgins was able to get a three to go at the buzzer for the final score of 76-75 and give the Hornets the season sweep of the Bearcats.
 
Brenden Van Dyke was nine of ten from the field for a career high 25 points.  He was joined in double figures by Mayuom Buom with 18 points on five of five shooting from the field and an eight of 11 effort at the free throw line.  Jumah'Ri Turner added 13 points while Tray Buchanan scored 11 with six assists and three steals.
 
The Hornets play their final two regular season games at home starting with Pittsburg State on Wednesday.  Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
NOTES
Tray Buchanan hit five of six free throws to give him a school record 210 on the season. He broke Marvin Chatman's mark of 209 set in 1986-87.
Buchanan also passed Chatman on the Hornets single season scoring list. He now has 679 points and passed Chatman's 674 points in 1986-87.
