February 23, 2022-Playing their third game in five days Emporia State grabbed a season high 48 rebounds in a 75-52 win over Pittsburg State on Wednesday night in WL White Auditorium. With the win the Hornets hit the 20 win mark for the first time since 2006-07.
The Gorillas scored the first two points of the game and led 5-4 with 16:46 left in the first half. The Hornets then went on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good with
Mayuom Buom's dunk giving Emporia State a 19-9 lead with 11:22 left in the half.
Jumah'Ri Turner scored to make it 23-11 with 8:56 left to give the Hornets their largest lead of the first half. The pace slowed considerably over the final nine minutes with Emporia State taking a 34-23 lead to the break.
After Magic Releford scored the first points of the second half for Pitt State, the Hornets rolled off a 12-0 run to go up 46-25 with 15:21 left in the game. The Gorillas would not get within single digits the rest of the game. They did cut it to 12 at 50-38 with 9:45 remaining, only to see Emporia State respond with an 18-2 run as they took their biggest lead of the night at 68-40 with 4:17 left. Pitt State closed the game on a 12-7 run to get the final score under 25 points.
Tray Buchanan had his first career double-double with 25 points and ten rebounds. He was joined in double figures by
Jumah'Ri Turner with 15 points and
Kaden Evans with ten points and eight rebounds.Â
Mayuom Buom had eight pionts and three blocked shots.
The Hornets will play their final home game of the season on Saturday, February 26 against Washburn. Tip-off for the Senior Day Turnpike Tussle is set for 3:30 p.m. in WL White Auditorium.
