February 13, 2022 – Emporia State scored in four separate innings to defeat CSU-Pueblo 14-3 in 7 innings to split the four-game weekend series at Trusler Sports Complex.
After holding the Thunderwolves scoreless in the first,
Sam Chaput drew a leadoff walk for the Hornets and later came around to score on an RBI single from
Kadyn Williams.
CSU-Pueblo responded in the second inning when Cole Knightley singled up the middle to give the Thunderwolves a 2-1 lead over the Hornets.
Jared Kengott responded by striking out two of three batters to keep the game at 2-1.
In the bottom half of the second inning, the Hornets loaded the bases with two outs for
Blake Carroll who delivered a single through the right side. On the attempted throw to the plate, the catcher was overthrown, allowing the Hornets to clear the bases and Carroll to advance to second as the Hornets took the lead 4-2. The next at-bat
Kadyn Williams singled into left field driving in
Blake Carroll. Williams attempted to advance to second which resulted in an overthrow that carried into right field allowing Williams to come all the way around to score as the Hornets took a 6-2 lead.
The Thunderwolves were able to tally another run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single from Reggie Williams which caused the Hornets to bring in
Braden Meek who promptly struck out the first batter he faced.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Hornets tallied another five-run inning. After promptly loading the bases,
Dylan Werries reached on a fielder's choice and drove in a run. In the next at-bat,
TJ Racherbaumer was thrown out at home on an attempted squeeze bunt by
Brenden Tauber. With two outs, the Hornets got back to the top of the lineup and
Sam Chaput and
Blake Carroll recorded back-to-back doubles and extended the Hornet lead to 11-3.
The sixth inning brought another two-out rally for Emporia State as
Dylan Werries recorded an RBI single to score
Lukas Rich and was followed by
Brenden Tauber hitting a two-run single to right field to score Werries and
Chandler Bloomer. The Hornets then held the Thunderwolves scoreless in the seventh to clinch the run-rule victory 14-3.
Braden meek received the win out of the bullpen in 1.1 scoreless innings. Four Hornets recorded multi-hit games including freshman
Kadyn Williams who went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and
Blake Carroll who was 2 for 4 on the day and drove in 3 runs.
The Hornets will return to Trusler Sports Complex on Friday, February 19, 2022, to take on Metro St.-Denver. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Glennen Field.
