December 17, 2022 – Emporia State nearly led from start to finish in 64-56 win over Northwest Missouri on Saturday evening.
The Lady Hornets started the scoring in the first minute of the game as
Victoria Price brought in an offensive rebound before scoring on a putback layup. Northwest Missouri would take their lone lead of the game with 7:29 remaining in the first quarter as the Bearcats knocked down the first of their 11 threes in the game to take a 3-2 advantage.
Emporia State limited the Bearcats to just 25 seconds with the lead as
Faith Paramore would score on the following possession to give the Lady Hornets the lead back that they did not relinquish for the remainder of the game. The Lady Hornets outscored the Bearcats 11-5 to end the first quarter as they held a 16-8 lead.
In the second quarter, Emporia State held Northwest Missouri to just five points in the first seven minutes of the quarter as they built a 27-13 lead over the Bearcats. Over the final three minutes of the first half, Northwest Missouri put together a 7-2 run to return the deficit to single digits heading into the halftime break.
In the first half, Emporia State shot just 11-31 from the floor but were able to force 15 Bearcat turnovers which gave the Lady Hornets a 14-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
Tre'Zure Jobe led six Lady Hornets that scored with 9 points in the first half.
Like the start of the game,
Victoria Price scored the first basket of the second half, this time on a fastbreak three off an assist from
Ehlaina Hartman. The Lady Hornets led by double-digits for much of the third quarter as they held a 45-34 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Northwest Missouri started the fourth quarter by cutting the Emporia State lead down to seven as they hit a pair of threes within the first two minutes. The Lady Hornets responded with an 11-2 run to build a 16-point lead, their largest of the game.
The Bearcats were again able to cut the lead down seven in the final minutes, but Emporia State finished off the game with a 64-56 win over Northwest Missouri as they improved to 8-1 on the season and 4-0 in the MIAA.
As a team, Emporia State shot 41.8% while limiting the Bearcats to 36.7% from the floor. The Lady Hornets forced 23 turnovers as they outscored Northwest Missouri 24-7 in points off turnovers. Emporia State also outscored the Bearcats 32-6 in the paint.
Tre'Zure Jobe led the Lady Hornets with 23 points, including 10-11 from the free throw line.
Victoria Price led eight more Lady Hornets on the scoresheet with 9 points.
Ehlaina Hartman,
Faith Paramore and
Maary Lakes each had 6 points of their own with Lakes also grabbing a team-high 8 rebounds.
Emporia State will return to White Auditorium on Monday, December 19 as they take on Missouri Western. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 1:30 p.m.
