October 8, 2022 - Emporia State fell in four sets against Missouri Western after taking the first set of the match.
The first set started with the Hornets falling behind early. The Griffons took a 14-10 lead over the Hornets halfway through the set before Emporia State responded. The Hornets rattled off a 10-2 scoring run to take a 20-16 lead over Missouri Western. Emporia State was able to maintain their advantage as they took the first set over the Griffons 25-20.
Emporia State started slow in the second set and Missouri Western took advantage as the Griffons started the set 13-2 over the Hornets. Emporia State was unable to gain any momentum to rally back as the Hornets fell 25-10 in the second set.
In the third set, the two teams traded points early on as the Hornets held a 7-6 lead over the Hornets. After the Griffons took a 12-11 lead at the halfway point of the set, Missouri Western rattled off 13 consecutive points as they took the third set 25-11 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Similar to the beginning of the third set, the Hornets and Griffons traded points as the score was tied 9-9. Missouri Western took advantage of the set with a 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead over the Hornets. Emporia State closed the deficit to three points before the Griffons boosted their lead back to seven as they took the set 25-18 to win the match 3-1 over Emporia State.
Leah Mach and
Orianna Clements led the Hornets with seven kills each.
Winny Harris had four kills and four blocks for the Hornets.
Riley Bernskoetter tallied 12 assists while
Grace Xu recorded 11 of her own.
Shelby Ebert led the Hornets with 21 digs on the defensive side.
Emporia State will travel to #5 Nebraska-Kearney for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, October 11. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
