EMPORIA STATE SOCCER KNOCKS OFF #3 CENTRAL MISSOURI 3-1 IN WARRENSBURG

Hornets get goals from Kristindottir, Hughes and Dimarco in win

October 7, 2022-Emporia State won their third straight match against Central Missouri as the Hornets defeated the third ranked Jennies 3-1 in Warrensburg on Friday night.

The Hornets got on the board when Asta Kirstendottir put the ball past the keeper off a corner kick from Joanie Westcoat in the 19th minute.  The Jennies evened it in the 37th minute when Caroline Cole was able to get around a Hornet defender and past a diving Tori Bailey in goal to make it 1-1.

Emporia State would retake the lead in the 62nd minute.  Westcoat launched a free kick from near midfield and Aislinn Hughes was able to get her head on the ball and direct it into the net for a 2-1 ESU lead.

Mackenzie Dimarco gave the Hornets an insurance goal with under eight minutes remaining.  The Jennies had a free kick from near the left sideline about 40 yards away that was blocked out at the top of the box.  Dimarco controlled the ball and took off down the middle of the field.  She ran through a tackle attempt in the back field and then sprinted past two defenders just past midfield.  Going one v one on the keeper, she made a move about 15 yards out that faked out the keeper and she was able to put the ball in the net uncontested. The Hornets then played out the clock to pick up their first win over a top five team in program history.

Emporia State will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Joplin, Mo. to take on Missouri Southern.  Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

NOTES
Dimarco became just the fourth player in MIAA history to score 50 goals.
