October 4, 2022 - Emporia State fell in three sets against Fort Hays State on Tuesday night.
In the first set, both teams started off by trading points early on with Fort Hays State eventually leading 12-11 halfway through the set. Emporia State was unable to take the lead on the Tigers as Fort Hays State rattled off a 9-0 run to take a 21-11 lead over the Hornets. The two teams would again trade points for the remainder of the set as the Tigers took the first set 25-15.
The second set started in better fashion for Emporia State as the Hornets led 10-9 over the Tigers. After a quick 4-1 spurt by Fort Hays State to take a two point lead, Emporia State scored five straight to take a three point lead right back. With the Hornets leading 18-15, Fort Hays State scored eight of the next ten points to take a 23-20 on their way to a 25-22 win in the second set as the Hornets fell behind 2-0 in the match.
Emporia State was unable to stifle the Tiger momentum from the second set in the third. Early in the set, both teams traded points until the score was tied 10-10. Another large run from Fort Hays State ultimately kept the Hornets at a distance as the Tigers scored 12 of the next 14 points as they led 22-12 over the Hornets. Emporia State rallied late to trim the deficit but were unable to climb all the way back as the Tigers took the third set 25-20 to sweep the match 3-0.
Leah Mach led the Hornets with seven kills while
McKenya Sorrells added six while hitting .375 in the match. Sorrells added a solo block and three total to lead the Hornets.
Ainslee Stepp recorded 15 assists in the match while
Shelby Ebert led the way in defense with 15 digs.
Emporia State will be back in action on Friday, October 7 as they return home to White Auditorium as they are scheduled to take on Central Missouri. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
