October 23, 2022-On a warm, blustery day at the ESU Pitch, Emporia State took advantage of 30+ mph winds to post a 2-0 win over Washburn and secure the second seed in the MIAA Tournament.
The Ichabods had the wind advantage in the first half and had the ball in their attacking end most of the period. They would only outshoot the Hornets 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes and both teams only got one shot on goal.
Emporia State had the wind in the second half and would outshoot Washburn 10-0 in the period. The match remained scoreless through the 80
th minute until
Mackenzie Dimarco took a throw in from
Haley Sparks and got the Hornets on the board with just 9:22 left in the match. Less than four minutes later
Anna Burnett found Spark who was able to give Emporia State an insurance goal in the 85
th minute.

For the match Emporia State outshot Washburn 15-7 with a 5-1 advantage on goal.Â
Tori Bailey went the distance in goal for her first career solo shutout.

With the win Emporia State secured the second seed in the MIAA Tournament that begins next weekend. The Hornets will play host to Northeastern State on Sunday, October 30 with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m. on the ESU Pitch.
NOTES
The Hornets have now recorded five shutouts in their last seven matches.
Mackenzie Dimarco recorded her 53
rd career goal to move into a tie for third in MIAA history with Ashley Munnelly who played at MSSU from 2001-02 and at SBU in 2004.
Mackenzie Dimarco scored her 112
th career point to move past UCM's Makayla Toth (111 in 74 matches from 2017-19) for fifth on the MIAA career points list.
