EMPORIA STATE SOCCER ADVANCES TO MIAA SEMIFINALS WITH 2-0 WIN OVER NORTHEASTERN STATE

Hornets get goals from Palmer and Dimarco as they return to semifinals for fourth straight season

October 30, 2022-Defending MIAA Tournament champion Emporia State advanced to the MIAA Semifinals for the fourth consecutive season with a 2-0 win over Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon on the ESU Pitch.

The Hornets were the aggressors from the beginning, outshooting the RiverHawks 7-1 in the first half and controlling the ball in their attacking end for most of the period.  Angela Palmer got Emporia State on the board with a header off a corner from Hannah Woolery in the 33rd minute.  It was the third of four corners for the Hornets in the opening 45 minutes.

Emporia State picked up an insurance goal 15 minutes into the second half.  Mackenzie Dimarco took a pass at midfield and went by three RiverHawk defenders.  As she was getting pulled down by the back of the shirt about ten yards from the goal, she was able to get a shot off and past the keeper to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.

That was more than enough for Emporia State keeper Tori Bailey and the rest of the Hornet defense who posted their third consecutive shutout and sixth in the their last eight matches.

With the win Emporia State will take on Northwest Missouri in the Semifinals on Friday, November 4 in Warrensburg, Mo.  Kickoff from the South Rec Complex is set for 12 noon.

NOTES:
Emporia State is now 4-0-1 against Northeastern State in the MIAA Tournament.  NSU advanced in a shootout in the lone tie during the 2019 semifinals.
