October 2, 2022 - Emporia State recorded their first shutout of the season in a 6-0 victory over Missouri Western.
The Hornets jumped out to a quick start that set the tone for most of the match as
Hannah Woolery recorded a shot within the first 90 seconds to force a save from the Griffon goalkeeper.
Aislinn Hughes would force another save just over seven minutes into the match. Emporia State continued to apply the pressure to Missouri Western as they earned four corner kicks in roughly a two minute span that resulted in shots from
Kyleigh Roe,
Haley Sparks and a second from
Aislinn Hughes. The Hornets finally broke through with a goal from
Mackenzie Dimarco in the 17th minute. Dimarco raced in behind the Griffon backline to finish off a
Joanie Westcoat free kick from the defensive half of the field to put the Hornets ahead 1-0.
Three minutes later in the 20th minute, Westcoat served in another free kick that found the head of
Aislinn Hughes who directed it past the keeper to double the Emporia State lead to 2-0. In the 23rd minute, Dimarco would find the net for the second time, scoring off an assist from
Hannah Woolery to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. The scoring would continue within the last ten minutes of the first half following an Emporia State throw in. Missouri Western attempted to clear the ball away from goal, but were unable to as
Mikayla Lampe won possession back. After beating two defenders on her way into the box, Lampe slotted a right footed shot into the bottom left corner past the diving Griffon goalkeeper as Emporia State took a 4-0 lead which they held into the halftime break.
After halftime, the attacking slowed for the Hornets as they registered just one shot in the first ten minutes after the break. The slow start was quickly interrupted by a pair of Hornet goals before the 60th minute concluded. The Hornets earned a throw in near the Emporia State bench and after a few juggles from
Alexis Cole, Cole passed up the side to
Haley Sparks who shot from near the touchline to put the ball into the top of the net above the outstretched hand of the Griffon goalkeeper. The scoring concluded just minutes later with
Mackenzie Dimarco earning a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Dimarco stepped to the spot and slotted the ball away into the left side of the net to ensure her second consecutive hat trick and give the Hornets a 6-0 lead in the match.Â
Emporia State was able to hold Missouri Western scoreless for the remainder of the match, with goalkeeper
Mackenzi Goen recording five saves in the final 27 minutes.
Mackenzie Dimarco recorded her second consecutive hat trick which also allowed her to surpass 100 career points, extending her Hornet soccer record.
Aislinn Hughes,
Haley Sparks and
Mikayla Lampe each recorded a goal with Lampe recording her first of her career.
Joanie Westcoat tallied two assists, while
Hannah Woolery and
Alexis Cole each recorded one of their own.
Emporia State will travel to Central Missouri on Friday, October 7. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
