Washburn took an early lead on the Hornets in the first set before Emporia State was able to cut the Ichabod lead to 8-7. Despite trimming the deficit, Emporia State was unable to tie the set as Washburn rattled off a 9-1 scoring to take a 17-8 lead over the Hornets. The Ichabods were able to sustain the momentum as they took the first set over the Hornets 25-12.

The second set started again with the Hornets falling behind early with Washburn leading 7-3. Emporia State responded with an 11-3 scoring run that included a pair of kills from Leah Mach, Zuzanna Buchnajzer and Winny Harris. Washburn worked to climb back into the set as they eventually drew even with Emporia State with the second set tied 20-20. After the two teams traded points, Emporia State held onto a 23-22 lead over the Ichabods. The Hornets were unable to hold the Ichabods off any longer as Washburn scored three straight to take the second set 25-23 and lead the match 2-0.
