October 14, 2022 - Emporia State recorded their third shutout of the season and third in the last four matches in 4-0 win over Newman.
Emporia State started on the front foot against Newman despite going against the wind in the first half. The Hornets recorded eight shots in the first 20 minutes of the while allowing just two shots for the Jets. Emporia State was finally able to break through in the 24th minute on a goal from
Erica Self. Following a short free kick by the Jets goalkeeper, the Hornets won possession back as the ball fell to
Angela Palmer. Palmer was tackled outside the box and Self beat the defense to the loose ball and placed it into the bottom left corner to put the Hornets ahead 1-0.
The Hornets continued to apply the pressure as they would add two more goals in the final 12 minutes of the half. In the 34th minute, the Hornets won possession back in the midfield as the ball came to
Mackenzie Dimarco in the center of the pitch roughly 30 yards from goal. Dimarco beat the first defender before getting a shot off from the top of the box that was blocked by the Jets goalkeeper. Dimarco then beat the defense to the rebound as she was able to place the ball into the top right corner, doubling Emporia State's advantage to 2-0. The Hornets would score their third goal in the 40th minute as
Hannah Woolery pounced on a rebound following an
Aislinn Hughes shot from the top of the box.
Following the halftime break, Woolery scored her second of the match just under four minutes into the second half. After the Hornets won a throw in deep in the Jets' half of the field,
Asta Kristindottir delivered a throw-in that bounced freely in the box before falling to
Hannah Woolery. Woolery took one touch before turning and lofting a left-footed shot over the goalkeeper into the top left corner to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the match.
Emporia State kept Newman from recording a shot in the second half as the Hornets outshot the Jets 21-5 for the match and 8-0 in shots on goal.
Erica Self recorded her second goal of the season on
Angela Palmer's second assist.
Mackenzie Dimarco recorded her 13th goal of the season as she now has 51 goals and 108 points for her career.
Hannah Woolery recorded a brace as she now has 10 goals on the season. Woolery's goals were assisted by
Asta Kristindottir who now has three assists this season and
Aislinn Hughes who recorded her first assist of the season.
Emporia State will return to the ESU Pitch on Sunday, October 16 as they take on Central Oklahoma. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
