EMPORIA STATE ROLLS TO 85-69 WIN OVER NEWMAN

Mayuom Buom with double-double in win

January 30, 2022-After allowing Newman to shoot 63% in the first half, Emporia State clamped down on defense and held the Jets to 38.5% shooting in the second on the way to an 85-69 Hornet victory on Sunday in White Auditorium.
 
Emporia State scored the first eight points of the game only to see Newman answer with 10-0 run of their own.  The Jets took their biggest lead of the day at 19-14 with 10:37 left and the teams traded scores over the next two minutes.  Jumah'Ri Turner hit a three-pointer with 4:53 to tie the game at 29 only to see the Jets score the next four points to go back up 33-29 at the 3:51 mark.  Turner and Tray Buchanan then combined on a 10-4 run to end the half and give the Hornets a 39-37 advantage at the break.
 
The Hornets led 47-41 early in the second half when they went on an 11-0 run to take control of the game for good. Buchanan started the run with a step back three-pointer at the 17:25 mark and Brenden Van Dyke ended it with back to back dunks to give Emporia State a 60-43 lead with 13:15 left. Newman got the lead to single digits with 9:11 left on a pair of Branden Bunn free throws.  The Hornets answered with a 7-0 run to go back up 74-58 with 6:48 remaining as they then coasted to the 85-69 win.
 
Jumah'Ri Turner led Emporia State with a game high 25 points and five assists while Mayuom Buom had a double-double with a career high 19 points and ten rebounds.  Tray Buchanan had 13 points, five assists and five steals while Kaden Evans added 12 points to put four Hornets in double figures.
 
Emporia State is back in action on Thursday, February 3 at Northeastern State.  Tip-off from the NSU Event Center in Tahlequah, Okla. is set for 7:30 p.m.
