LADY HORNETS FALL IN TURNPIKE TUSSLE 72-67 TO WASHBURN

Four Lady Hornets in double figures in the loss

January 22, 2022-The Lady Hornets fought back from a 14 point deficit to close within three points but could not complete the comeback in a 72-67 loss to Washburn on Saturday afternoon.
 
Emporia State got off to a good start and led 11-7 with 5:52 left on a three-pointer from Ehlaina Hartman.  The Ichabods led 17-15 with 1:34 left in the period before Victoria Price scored the final five points of the quarter to five the Lady Hornets a 20-17 lead after one.
 
There were two ties and three lead changes in the first four minutes of the second quarter. After Washburn took a 28-25 lead with 5:19 left the two teams traded scores until the Ichabods went on a 7-2 run to go up 35-29 with 1:03 left.  Emily Weathers converted and old fashioned three-point play with 32.5 seconds left for Emporia State as the Lady Hornets trailed 35-32 at the break.
 
Emporia State was within 47-45 on a pair of Karson Schultz free throws with 3:35 left in the third quarter.  Washburn used a 7-1 run to go up 54-46 with 1:51 left and they took a 57-48 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Washburn scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 61-48 with 8:12 left and still led 65-53 at the final media timeout with 4:48 remaining.  The Lady Hornets went on a 9-0 run and Victoria Price's old fashioned three-point play pulled Emporia State within 65-62 with 1:38 left. Aubree Dewey just beat the shot clock with 1:07 left to give WU a five point lead.  Ehlaina Hartman answered with two free throws at the 56.0 mark to get ESU back within three at 67-64.  Hunter Bentley converted an old fashioned three-point play with 34.4 seconds left to push the lead back to six points.  After a missed shot by the Lady Hornets, Dewey missed two free throws with 26.9 seconds left.  Kali Martin then hit a three-pointer to pull Emporia State back to within three at 21.8 left.  Bentley then iced the game for Washburn with two free throws with 18.0 left for the 72-67 victory.
 
Tre'Zure Jobe led four Lady Hornets in double figures with 15 points while Victoria Price and Ehlaina Hartman each scored 12 and Karsen Schultz added ten points. 
 
The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Wednesday, January 26 when they play host to Central Oklahoma.  Tip-off from WL White Auditorium is set for 5:30 p.m.
 
NOTES
With her 15 points, Tre'Zure Jobe now has 1,334 points and passed Amy Redmon (1,323 pts from 1988-92) for 18th on the Lady Hornet all-time scoring list.
