April 13, 2021-The Emporia State tennis teams split in road non-conference play Tuesday at McPherson. The women won 5-2 while the men were edged by the Bulldogs 4-3.
The Emporia State women took the doubles point with Silvana Caceras and
Kelsie Burr winning 6-3 at #1 while
Cyrielle Peyroche and
Karen Santiago Sanchez won 6-3 in the #3 position.
The Hornets then won the first four completed singles matches to secure the dual win. Santiago Sanchez started things with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #3 followed by a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) win at #2 by
Viktoria Mackova. Peyroche clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #1 and Caceras took the final point with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #4 singles.
The Hornet men lost a hard fought 4-3 decision to the Bulldogs who improved to 8-1 on the season.
Theo Belmonte and
Harrison Brown continued their good spring with a 6-3 win at #3 doubles but McPherson would win the other to matches to take the point.
The Bulldogs would win the first three completed singles matches to clinch the dual however
Andy Graf would go to a third set at #3 before falling 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Brown won 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) at #4 singles, Pablo Correnza won 7-6, 6-4 at #5 and Belmonte got the final point for the Hornets with a 6-4,6-4 win at #6 singles.
The Emporia State women will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Missouri Western in an MIAA dual. Both teams will then play host to Newman on Monday, April 19 at the EHS Courts.
