March 27, 2021-The Emporia State tennis teams were swept by Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon in Maryville, Mo.
In a top ten regional matchup, the Hornet men fell to the Bearcats 7-0 but did have two singles matches go to a third set.
Taylor Nelson took Fabien Calloud to the third set at #2 singles, falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. At #5 singles
Harrison Brown won the first set 6-3 and dropped the second 6-2. With the match clinched they just played a tiebreaker in the third with Fillippo Piranomonte winning 10-7. Northwest entered the match ranked #23 in the nation and #2 in the region while Emporia State was ranked #8 in the region.
The Emporia State women also went down 7-0 to the regionally ranked Bearcats.
Kelsie Burr and Viktoria Mackove fell 7-6 to Vera Brusa and Sofia Pignataro at #1 doubles while Silvana Caceras won her first set 6-0 over Pignataro at #4 singles before falling 7-6 in the second and 10-7 in the third set tiebreaker.
Emporia State is back action on Sunday for a Tennis Turnpike Tussle in Topeka when they travel to Wasbhurn. First serve at the Washburn Tennis Complex is set for 11:00 a.m.
