HORNET SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH FORT HAYS STATE ON SATURDAY

Emporia State wins game one 5-0, falls 7-5 in nightcap

March 27, 2021-Emporia State split their double header with Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 5-0 before dropping the second game 7-5.
 
Game One
Kelsey Phillips tossed her second straight shutout as Emporia State won the matinee 5-0.
Phillips helped herself out by getting an RBI single in the first inning and then delivered a two run double in the third to give Emporia State a 3-0 lead.  Gabby Biondo then singled her in to make it 4-0 going to the fourth inning.  Abby Ward had an RBI single in the fourth for the final score.
Phillips went the distance as she extended her scoreless streak to 17.0 innings. She scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings with no walks and one strikeout in the circle and was three for three with three RBI at the plate.
 
Game Two
The Hornet pitching staff saw their string of scoreless innings stop at 23.0 when the Tigers scored four runs in the top of the second.  Kristen Reed hit a two run home run and Elise Capra followed her with a solo shot while Jessica Espinoza would score on a wild pitch to give Fort Hays State a 4-0 lead.  Sara Breckbill hit a three run homer in the fourth top put the Tigers ahead 7-0. 
Karley Johnson broke the ice for the Hornets with a sac fly and Roni Raines hit a pinch hit RBI double in the fourth inning.  Emma Furnish walked, stole second and scored on a Brittanie Shepherd single to make it 7-3 after five innings. In the seventh Shepherd hit an RBI double that scored Furnish but Gabby Biondo was thrown out at the plate. Kerrigan Dixon followed with an RBI single to bring the tying run to the plate but the Hornets would not get anymore in the 7-5 loss.
Shepherd went three for four with two runs and two RBI while Dixon was three for four with a run and an RBI. 
 
The Hornets are scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, March 31 when they travel to Rockhurst for a non-conference double header.  First pitch from the Loyola Park Softball Field in Kansas City, Mo. is set for 3:00 p.m.
