Hornets held to just three hits on the day

March 31, 2021-Emporia State was swept by Rockhurst on Wednesday night in non-conference softball action.  The Hornets lost 13-2 in game one and 3-0 in game two.

Game 1
Rockhurst sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first and scored nine runs to take control early in the matinee.  The first six Hawks reached safely and they went through the lineup once before Brylie Bassett relieved Kelsey Phillips in the circle.  Emporia State got on the board in the top of the fourth when Roni Raines singled, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home on the second wild pitch of the inning.  Rockhurst answered in the bottom of the inning with four more runs to go up 13-1.  The Hornets go one more run in the top of the fifth when Kerrigan Dixon reached on a two base error by the rightfielder, then went to third when Abby Ward reached on an error at third base.  Emma Furnish drove Kerrigan home with a single to make the final score 13-2.

Game 2
The Hornets were held to just one hit in the second game as Rockhurst completed the sweep with a 3-0 win in the nightcap. Gabby Biondo singled with two outs in the top of the first and stole second but was stranded there. The Hawks scored two in the bottom of the second and were threatening with two on and one out.  Josie Harrison got out of the inning when she got a pop up back to her in the circle and was able to double the runner off of third base.  It stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Maya Gallagher hit s solo home run to make it 3-0.  After Biondo's single in the first Lexi Storrer retired the final 19 Hornet batters and struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
