November 9, 2021 – Emporia State played host to William Jewell in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night from White Auditorium. The Hornets fell 3-0 against the Cardinals.
In the first set, Emporia State fell behind 7-3 and immediately responded with four consecutive points to tie the set. The Cardinals later scored six straight points to turn a 12-11 deficit into a 17-12 lead over the Hornets. Strong play for the remainder of the set was not enough for the Emporia State as William Jewell took the first set 25-21.
The second set was played close throughout most of the set and the Hornets and the Cardinals exchanged the lead on multiple occasions. Emporia State managed to hold the lead as late as 19-18 in the set. Despite the late lead for the Hornets, William Jewell scored seven straight points to take the second set 25-19.
In the third set, the Hornets were unable to halt the momentum carried over from the previous set by the Cardinals. William Jewell opened an early 7-2 lead over the Hornets and eventually a 15-4 advantage. The Hornets were unable to bounce back from the early deficit and fell in the third set 25-11 and allowing the Cardinals to take the match 3-0.
Leah Mach led the way for the Hornets with 9 kills while
Shelby Ebert and
Dorianne Lebron added 8 and 6 respectively.
Ainslee Stepp and
Riley Bernskoetter combined for 26 assists with Stepp totaling 14 and Bernskoetter adding 12.
Rylie Fornelli tallied 14 digs in defense.
Emporia State will return to White Auditorium this weekend for their final matches of the regular season. They will take on Northwest Missouri on Friday, November 12. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
