HORNET VOLLEYBALL SWEPT IN ROAD TILT AGAINST GORILLAS

Emporia State falls 3-0 to Pittsburg State

November 6, 2021 – The Hornets traveled to Pittsburg State on Saturday to take on the Gorillas. Pittsburg State defeated Emporia State 3-0.

In the first set, the Hornets started from behind as the Gorillas took the first four points of the match and seven of the first nine to claim an early 7-2 lead. Pittsburg State would ride the early momentum throughout the set and take down the Hornets 25-12 in the first set.

The second set was much improved for the Hornets as they were able to limit possible runs by the Gorillas. The largest lead for Pittsburg State came with a 19-13 lead over Emporia State before the Hornets immediately responded with three consecutive points. Despite the improved play by Emporia State, they still fell in the second set 25-20.

A rough start to the third set awaited the Hornets as they were unable to slow down the Gorilla attack. Pittsburg State claimed 14 of the first 16 points in the set. Emporia State responded well by outscoring the Gorillas 14-11 the remainder of set, however the Gorillas claimed the third set 25-16 over the Hornets and took the match 3-0.

Leah Mach had 9 kills to lead the way for the Hornets and had a .389 hitting percentage on the night. Ainslee Stepp and Riley Bernskoetter both reached double-digit assists with 14 and 10 each. Rylie Fornelli reached double-digit digs with 10 in the match.

Emporia State will return home to White Auditorium on Tuesday, November 9 as they begin their final home stand of the season. The Hornets will take on William Jewell. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
