#4 EMPORIA STATE COMES FROM BEHIND FOR 5-3 WIN OVER NORTHEASTERN STATE

Hornets overcome biggest deficit of the season in win

October 10, 2021-Fourth ranked Emporia State scored four straight goals to overcome their largest deficit of the season in a 5-3 victory over Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Hornets scored first when Hannah Woolery took a pass from Gaby Crowell and put it past the RiverHawk keeper with 25:00 left in the first half.  Northeastern State evened the score when Livy Wagner scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
 
The RiverHawks took the lead just two minutes later when Lauren Parton found Hannah Stettler in front of the goal and she put it into the upper right hand corner of the goal.  Northeastern State finished their first half onslaught four minutes later when Stettler scored her second goal of the match on a drive from 18 yards out that got past a diving Jillian Patton in the left hand side of the goal.
 
Despite a 9-6 advantage on shots and 6-2 edge on corners in the first 45 minutes, the Hornets were trailing at the half for just the second time this season.
 
Emporia State started their comeback just over five minutes into the second half when Ashlyn Lakin recorded her fourth flip throw in assist of the season and Aislinn Hughes headed the ball into the upper right corner to make it 3-2.  Lakin then scored the equalizer in the 67th minute when she was able to boot one into the net following a scrum in front of the goal.
 
Joanie Westcoat gave the Hornets the lead for good when she took a pass from Hughes, turned and fired a shot from 25 yards out the snuck through the keeper's legs with just under 20 minutes remaining. Mackenzie Dimarco gave Emporia State an insurance goal less than ten minutes later when she took a feed from Westcoat, made one move past a defender and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal from 18 yards out for the final score.
 
For the match Emporia State outshot Northeastern State 17-9 with a 12-5 advantage on goal. 
 
The Hornets are back on the road next Friday night when they travel to Central Oklahoma.  Kick-off from Edmond, Okla. is set for 7:00 p.m.
 
NOTES
Northeastern State's 3-1 advantage at the half was the biggest deficit Emporia State had faced since trailing Northwest Missouri 2-0 at the half in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on November 8, 2019.  The Hornets came back to win that match 3-2 in overtime.    
Emporia State is technically on a 16 match unbeaten streak.  Their MIAA Tournament match against Northeastern State in 2019 is recorded as a tie, although the Hornets were eliminated from the tournament in a shootout. The last official loss for Emporia State was a 3-2 overtime loss at Central Missouri on October 27, 2019.
