EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL SPLITS DAY ONE OF WU INVITATIONAL

Hornets defeat Sioux Falls 13-6, fall to UMSL 11-1

February 28, 2020-Emporia State split two games on Friday at the Washburn Invitational, defeating Sioux Falls 13-6 before falling 11-1 to Mo.-St. Louis in Topeka.
 
ESU 13, USF 6
Emporia State scored the first five runs of the game and then exploded for seven runs in the fifth on the way to a 13-6 victory over Sioux Falls at the Washburn Softball Complex.
Cassidy Beem continued her hot hitting with a two run single in the first inning.  The Hornets added three runs in the top of the second to go up 5-0.  The Cougars got one run in the second and three more in the third to pull within 5-4.  Destiny Ojigoh pushed the lead back to two runs with an RBI double in the fourth before Emporia State scored seven runs in the fifth to blow the game open.  Hannah Steeby had the big hit, a grand slam home run that put the Hornets up 13-4 going to the bottom of the fifth.  Kaitlyn VanDerZwaag kept the game going with a two run homer in the fifth but that would be the last of the scoring.
Steeby was three for four with three runs, a double, grand slam homer and five RBI to lead the Hornet offense. Maddy Broxterman went three for four with three runs scored while Ojigoh was three for four with two RBI and two runs scored.
 
UMSL 11, ESU 1
Steeby got the Hornets started with a leadoff homer in the top of the first, but that would be the only run of the game as Emporia State fell 11-1 in five innings to Mo.-St.Louis in their second game.
The Tritons got two run home runs in the second from Corinne Daley and fourth from McKenzie Lamos to take a 4-1 lead.  They scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the run rule on Morgan Skyles bases loaded double that made it 11-1.
The Hornets had four errors that led to five unearned runs in the contest.
Andy Tiffee tossed a one hitter with the one hit being Steeby's leadoff homer in the first.
 
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they play St. Cloud State at 12:30 p.m. followed by Rockhurst at 2:30 p.m. at the Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
