HORNET SOFTBALL SPLITS SATURDAY ACTION AT WU INVITATIONAL

Emporia State falls to St. Cloud State before beating Rockhurst

February 29, 2020-Emporia State split their two Saturday games at the WU Invitational in Topeka.  The Hornets lost 8-0 to St. Cloud State in their first game of the day and then ended the day with a 3-2 win over Rockhurst.
 
SCSU 8, ESU 0
The Hornets were shutout for just the third time this year in an 8-0 loss to the Huskies.
Megan Conrads put the Huskies up 1-0 with an RBI double and Jasmin Estrada made 3-0 with a two run homer in the first inning.  St. Cloud State added four runs, two of which were unearned, in the third to go up 7-0.  They ended the game with a thanks to an unearned run in the sixth when Brooke Bowlin walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
The Hornets had seven hits in the game with Rachel Kauss, Gabby Biondo and Maddy Broxterman each getting two hits.
 
ESU 3, RU 2
The Hornets scored three runs in the final two innings to get a come from behind, 3-2 walk off win against the Hawks.
Rockhurst took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly in the second inning and went up 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI single from Katie Wood.  The Hornets started their comeback with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Kerrigan Dixon singled and pinch runner Abbey Ward stole second.  Gabby Biondo doubled down the left field line to get Emporia State on the board.  Brittanie Shepherd then singled in Biondo to tie the game at 2-2.  Lauren Marks tripled with one out in the top of the seventh for the Huskies but Dixon was able to get a ground out and a pop up to leave her stranded. In the bottom of the seventh Hannah Steeby got a one out triple for the Hornets but they were able to cash it in when Roni Raines delivered a single to right for the walk off win.
Gabby Biondo was two for three with an RBI and a run scored while Kerrigan Dixon went two for three as well.  Dixon also picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
 
The Hornets will wrap up their stay in Topeka on Sunday with games against Minn.-Crookston and Southwest Minnesota State.  First pitch against UMC is set for 9:00 a.m.
