HORNET SOFTBALL GETS GRAND SLAM IN WIN OVER SIOUX FALLS

Emporia State gets 7-2 win over Cougars

February 22, 2020-Cassidy Beem hit a first inning grand slam to propel Emporia State to a 7-2 victory over Sioux Falls in the final game of Saturday's action at the 5-State Classic at the Trusler Sports Complex.

With one out in the first Rachel Kauss walked, Jenna Spence singled and Hannah Steeby walked to load the bases.  Brittanie Shepherd then walked on four straight to force in the first run of the game.  Roni Raines single to the hole at short to drive in another run and make it 2-0.  Beem then crushed a 2-0 pitch over the wall in left to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead and chase Cougar starter Kaitlyn VanDerZwaag.

That would be all the scoring until Sydney Nieven singled to lead off the fifth for Sioux Falls and Frankie Mickelson brought her around with a homer to left.  Emporia State got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Brittanie Shepherd singled in pinch runner Emma Broxterman to make it 7-2.

Sydney Righi went the distance in the circle, giving up two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Beem had the big bat, going one for three with a run scored and four RBI on the grand slam.
