LADY HORNETS DRAIN 18 THREES IN 93-64 WIN OVER NEWMAN

Emporia State bounces back with 29 point win

January 22, 2020-The Lady Hornets hit 18 of 37 three-pointers on the way to a 93-64 win over Newman in White Auditorium on Wednesday night.

Emporia State got an emotional lift as Jessica Wayne made her return to the court after missing seven games with a knee injury.  The senior made her presence felt early as she scored the first points for Emporia State and had six of the first eight Lady Hornet points.   Braxtyn Stewart hit two free throws to give Newman a 10-8 lead with 6:41 left in the first.  Emporia State then went on a 16-0 run and took a 24-10 lead on Fredricka Sheats three-pointer with 1:47 left in the quarter.

The lead reached 19 points as Karsen Schultz hit back to back three-pointers to open the second quarter and give the Lady Hornets a 35-16 lead.  Newman answered with an 11-0 run of their own to cut their deficit to eight at 35-27 with 5:22 left in the half.  Mollie Mounsey and Tre'Zure Jobe combined to score all but two of Emporia State's points in a 14-3 run and Daley Handy brought the back to 19 on an elbow jumper with 1:08 left in the half.  The Lady Hornets took a 49-33 lead into the half.

Bailey Hawkins scored the first points of the second half to bring the Jets within 49-35 but that was as close as they would get in the third quarter.  Emporia State would end the period on a 12-3 run and Handy's buzzer beater gave the Lady Hornets a 72-45 lead going to the final period.  The teams played even on the scoreboard in the final ten minutes as Emporia State secured the 93-64 victory.

Mollie Mounsey led all scorers with 22 points, hitting six of ten from beyond the three point line.  She was joined in double figures by Karsen Schultz with a career high 17 points while Fredricka Sheats added 11 and Tre'Zure Jobe had ten points.

The Lady Hornets are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Central Oklahoma.  Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 1:30p.m.
