TOPEKA TURNPIKE TUSSLE
Emporia State travels to Topeka to take on Washburn in the first and only Turnpike Tussle of the 2019-20 regular season. This is the first time the Hornets have entered the game with a better record than the Ichabods since the 2008-09 season.

LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back in an 87-57 win over Baker. The Hornets shot .629 from the field in the first half, going 19 of 24  from inside the three point arc. Emporia State ended the game shooting .537 from the field.  Van Dyke led Emporia State with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. He was joined in double figures by Justin Williams with 13 points, Keyon Thomas with 12 and Rottweiler with 11 points.  Ten of 11 Hornets that suited up scored with nine grabbing at least two rebounds and nine dishing at least one assist.  

THE COACHES
Craig Doty is 22-19 in his second season at Emporia State. In his eighth season as a head coach at the D2, NAIA, and NJCAA level he is 184-69 with three national championships. In two seasons at Graceland, Doty went 49-22 and won the 2018 NAIA Division I National Championship in Municipal Auditorium. Prior to Graceland, Doty spent four years as the head coach at Rock Valley College winning two national championships and appearing in three straight NJCAA Division III title games to finish with a 113-28 record. He is 0-1 against Washburn.
Brett Ballard is 52-23 in his third year at Washburn and 85-53 in his fifth year as a head coach. He is 2-1 against Emporia State.

ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 8-3, 2-0 in the MIAA with two of their losses in overtime. They are third in the MIAA in scoring at 82.5 points per game with seven players averaging at least 5.5 points per game while a total of ten players have scored at least ten points in a game. Jumah'Ri Turner is the leading scorer for the Hornets at 14.4 points per game to rank 11th in the MIAA. Keyon Thomas is averaging 13.6 points while Brenden Van Dyke is averaging 7.4 rebounds per game to rank eighth in the MIAA and is second in blocks at 1.9 per game.

ABOUT THE ICHABODS
Washburn is 6-5, 1-1 in the MIAA. Tyler Geiman is eighth in the MIAA at 15.5 points per game and ranks second in assists at 6.4 per game. Jonny Clausing leads the league with 2.5 blocks per game while averaging 8.2 boards per game to rank fourth in the association.

SERIES HISTORY
According to Emporia State records this will be the 213th meeting between the two schools with Washburn leading 108-104. The home team has won 11 of the last 13 meetings between the two.

LAST TIME VS WASHBURN
Emporia State whittled a 24 point deficit down to ten with two minutes left before falling 94-81 to Washburn. Julius Jackson had  21 points and was joined in double digits by Kooper Glick with 12 and Justin Washington with 10 points.

UP NEXT
The Hornets return to White Auditorium to take on defending national champion Northwest Missouri on January 9. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

CENTURY MARK
Emporia State's 104-63 win over Saint Mary marked the 100th time the Hornets have cracked the century mark in their history.  They have reached 100 points five times in 41 games under Coach Doty, matching their total for the last eight seasons combined.  
The Hornets scored at least 100 points 60 times under coach Ron Slaymaker (827 total games in 28 seasons), 26 times under coach David Moe (288 games in 10 seasons), three times under coach Gus Fish (602 games in 25 seasons) and once under coach Marc Comstock (82 games in three seasons).

DOTY MAGIC
Three-time National Champion head coach Craig Doty is in his second season as head coach at Emporia State. Doty is 71-41 as a head coach at four year schools with an 22-19 record since taking over for the Hornets. He is 184-69 in his seventh year at the NCAA D2, NAIA and NJCAA levels, including an 81-42 mark in conference play.
A great builder of teams, he is 66-15 in games played in February and March with an unprecedented 29-5 record in the post-season. Two of those five post season losses were to the eventual national champion.
Doty led Rock Valley College and Graceland University to national prominence earlier in his career. In just two seasons at Graceland, Doty's program had a 49-22 record and won the 2018 NAIA Division I National Championship in the school's first trip to the national tournament at Kansas City's historic Municipal Auditorium. The Yellowjackets started the 2017-18 season 10-8 and ended the year winning 19 of their final 21 games. Along the way Doty earned NAIA National Coach of the Year, HoopDirt.com NAIA National Coach of the Year, and the 2018 Don Meyer Award.
Doty's programs at Rock Valley College won NJCAA Division III National titles in 2014 and 2016 while his 2015 squad came up just short finishing National Runner-up.

TOUGH ENOUGH
Emporia State played the 19th toughest schedule in the nation last year. As a league the MIAA had the best non-conference record in the country with a 104-42 (.712) record against all opponents and a 70-40 (.636) record against Division II foes.  The NSIC had an 86-54 (.614) non-conference record overall and 49-49 (.500) record against D2 schools while the GAC was 45-38 (.542) overall with a 28-31 (.475) record against Division II competition. The MIAA was undefeated against non-conference competition in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

FRIENDLY CONFINES
The Hornets are 395-181 (.686) since 1979 in White Auditorium. Emporia State has won 179 of their last 255 games (.702) in White Auditorium dating back to the 2002-03 season. In the last 35 years, they have twice had home court winning streaks of 23 games, the first was from 1985-87 with the most recent one coming from February 12, 2003-December 18, 2004.  They have posted winning seasons in 14 of the last 16 seasons.

HORNETS RANK IN NATION IN ATTENDANCE
The Emporia State men's basketball team continued a string of 17 straight years ranking in the top 25 in attendance among the over 300 NCAA Division II basketball playing schools.
The Hornets drew an average of 1,372 fans to their 13 home games at Slaymaker Court in White Auditorium during the 2018-19 season to rank 18th nationally. That is an average increase of over 90 fans per game as Emporia State moved up seven spaces from last year.
Emporia State outdrew 90 NCAA Division I schools during the 2018-19 school year, including seven teams that made the NCAA Division I Tournament. Within the Division II ranks, the Hornets outdrew seven of the eight teams that advanced to the Elite Eight and 12 of the 16 teams that reached regional finals.
The Hornets were among nine MIAA teams in the top 25 nationally. As a conference the MIAA drew 259,089 fans to 202 games to lead all Division II conference in average attendance at 1,283 fans per game. It is the 11th straight year the MIAA has led the nation in average attendance. The MIAA's total attendance was better than nine NCAA Division I conferences. The Central Region had a total of 13 teams ranked in the top 25 as four teams from the NSIC were on the list.

ON THE COURT
The court at William L. White Auditorium was formally named Ron Slaymaker Court at half-time of the Hornets win over Washburn on Feb. 28, 2014 after the City of Emporia approved a proclamation at their Feb. 20, 2014  city commission meeting.
AND IN THE RAFTERS
Dale Cushinberry (1966-69) - Cushinberry was an All-American for Emporia State and became the first Hornet with 1,000 points and 700 rebounds.
•Wilbur Reeser (1944-48) - Reeser was named an NAIB All-American and was the Hornets leading scorer as the won a conference championship in 1948.
•Ron Slaymaker (Player 1954-60, Coach 1970-98) - As a player Slaymaker was named All-Conference and All-American during the 1957-58 season. As a coach he won an ESU leading 462 games from 1970-98.
•Jim Fraley (1956-60) - Fraley was the school's all-time leading scorer (1,509) until Brian Robinson broke his record in 1985. He was named Second-team NAIA All-American.
•Doug Glaysher (1960-64) - Glaysher was named an All-American after leading the Hornets to the NAIA National Semi-finals in 1964. He graduated as the second leading scorer in ESU history.
•Brian Robinson (1984-86) - Robinson was named a first team All-American in both his junior and senior season. He is the ESU all-time leading scorer with 2,533 career points.

TURNING PRO
Emporia State's Julius Jackson became the third Hornet men's basketball player to sign professionally after last season when he signed a professional contract with Raiders Basket Jarvenpaa in Finland. Hassan Thomas signed with Sampaense Basket of Portugal Proliga while Malik Hluchoweckyj signed with KK Bratunac of the Bosnia BiH Liga earlier this summer. This is the first time in school history the Hornets have had three players from the same class sign to play professionally in the same year.

He averaged 17 points a game for Lakewood HS in Denver as a senior in 2016-17.

He is fourth in the MIAA in steals,11th in made threes, assists and assist to turnover ratio, and 16th in scoring. He scored 12 points on five of seven shooting with five assists and three steals against Baker. He had ten points and four assists against Fort Hays State. He had 21 points and six steals against Saint Mary to become the first Hornet freshman to score at least 20 points in four straight games since Emporia State joined the NCAA. He scored 22 points against William Jewell. He had 23 points against Rockhurst and hit five three-pointers. He scored a career high 30 points with five three-pointers against Sterling. He is the first Hornet freshman to score 30 points in a game since Wes Book in 2004.  He scored 11 points with five assists, three steals and no turnovers against Kansas Wesleyan. He scored ten points at Arkansas Tech.
Previously
He averaged 21.0 points, 4.8 assists, 3.9 steals and 3.9 rebounds per game as a senior.  He earned first-team All-State honors as a junior and senior. He was the Kaw Valley League Player of the Year for Bonner Springs HS.

He had six points and four rebounds against Baker. He scored eight points against Fort Hays State. He went three for three from the three-point line for nine points against Tabor. He scored eight points and pulled four rebounds against Southwestern Oklahoma.

Gage McGuire is a 6-6 forward from Coldwater, Mich. He averaged 10.3 rebounds per game as a senior after averaging 18.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.4 blocks per game for Coldwater HS as a junior. He is a two time AP Class A All-State selection for the Cardinals and was the Interstate 8 Conference MVP as a junior.

He had a career high 30 points with eight rebounds against Rokhurst. He scored 12 points against Tabor.  He scored 16 points on five of seven shooting against Kansas Wesleyan. He had 24 points in his ESU debut against Southwestern Oklahoma. He is in his second year at Emporia State after taking a medical redshirt last season.

He was an NJCAA Division III third-team All-American in 2018-19 as he averaged 22.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for Rochester (Minn.) Community and Technical College. He scored 14.0 points and grabbed 3.1 rebounds per game as a freshman for RCTC. He was an all-conference performer and named offensive player of the year as a senior for John F. Kennedy HS in Bloomington, Minn.

He averaged 15.7 points and 3.1 assists per game with 30 steals for Huntington University. He shot .490 from the field, .427 from the three-point line and .831 from the free throw line in 31 starts on his way to honorable mention All-Crossroads League recognition as a sophomore.  As a high school senior he averaged 11.2 points, 3.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game to lead Crispus Attucks HS in Anderson, Ind. to the 2017 Indiana Class 3A State Championship.

He had eight points and four rebounds against Sterling. He scored 11 points, with eight of them coming in just over a minute to cap a 15-4 game opening run against Kansas Wesleyan. He had six rebounds and a steal at K-State.
 As a Sophomore in 2018-19
He scored nine points with seven rebounds against Northeastern State in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament. He had seven points at Central Oklahoma. He scored seven points on three of four shooting against Missouri Southern. He scored five points and had two assists against Lincoln. He had nine points and seven rebounds at Northwestern Oklahoma. He scored a career high 13 points against McPherson. He earned his first career start at Rockhurst and finished with eight points and five rebounds. He had a team high seven rebounds in ten minutes against Saint Mary.  
As a Freshman in 2017-18
He scored a career high 12 points, all in the second half, at Pittsburg State on four of six shooting from the field with three rebounds. He hit a free throw with 1.5 seconds left against Central Oklahoma. He had six points and five rebounds at Missouri. He scored five points with four rebounds at Iowa State. He had seven points and two rebounds at Kansas State.
He red-shirted during the 2016-17 season.

He was a first-team All-Kansas player for Osage City HS in 2015-16. His father Dennis played for the Hornets from 1985-89.

He had seven points and six boards against William Jewell. He pulled eight rebounds with two blocks against Rockhurst. He had six points and five rebounds against Kansas Wesleyan. He pulled six rebounds against Southwestern Oklahoma. He had a team high nine rebounds with two blocks and a made three-pointer at Kansas State.

He averaged 22.0 points per game at the state Tournament as Inman finished third in the state. He averaged 17.5 points and 11.3 rebounds per game on the season. He earned first-team All-State honors as a senior after being named honorable mention All-State for the Teutons as a junior.

He averaged 17.0 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game at Alexandria HS. He was second on the team with 2.7 assists per game and earned All-Central Lakes Conference honors.

He grew 11 inches from eighth grade to his senior year and did not turn 18 until this month.

He had seven rebounds at Missouri Southern. He was four of seven from the field for eight points and had four assists and two steals at Mo Western. He had six points and four rebounds against Neb.-Kearney. He scored five points and pulled down eight rebounds against Rogers State. He scored eight points and had ten rebounds at Newman. He had nine points and five rebounds against #20 Southwest Minnesota.

He spent the previous two years at Cowley CC.  He started all 31 games and averaged 7.7 points with 4.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He played in all 32 games as a freshman and averaged 3.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
He averaged 11.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists as a senior for Bonner Springs HS.

He is the lone senior on the team but has not played in a regular season game yet with an ankle injury and will likely redshirt. He was injured early against Kansas State and only played three minutes.
As A Junior in 2018-19
He played in ten games last year. He had two assists in three minutes at Southwest Baptist. He scored a career high nine points with ten boards at Pitt State.  He hit the only shot he took against Saint Mary.  
Previously
He started 13 of 31 games for the Conquistadors as a sophomore and averaged 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He averaged 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a senior at Wichita Heights HS.
