September 6, 2019-Emporia State went to a second overtime before falling 4-3 to Rockhurst in their season opener at the Stoney Creek Hotel Classic in St. Joseph, Mo.

Tanna Benefiel got the Hornets on the board first when she scored in the tenth minute off an assist from
Mackenzie Dimarco. That lead would hold up for 20 minutes until Brittany Valieant scored following an assist from Haley Schroeder 30:37 into the match to tie the score. The Hawks took the lead 41 seconds later when Valieant assisted Mary Koeller on a goal to give Rockhurst a 2-1 lead at the break.

Kennedy Hoffman got an equalizer for the Hornets in the 65
th minute with
Hannah Woolery providing the assist.

Rockhurst retook the lead in the 78
th minute on a goal by Sydney Baker as Valieant picked up her second assist of the match. With just over eight minutes left in regulation

The two teams played a scoreless first overtime with each squad getting two shots off. Hoffman had a chance at the game winner but missed with 33 seconds left.

Emporia State had three shots with two on goal in the first five minutes of the second overtime. Hoffman and
Sydney Martens each had shots on goal within a minute of each other with 8:01 and 7:01 left in the overtime before Stephanie Ostrander scored the golden goal with 5:00 left of an assist from Jillian Leetch to give Rockhurst the win.

The Hornets will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on former MIAA foe Lindenwood. Kick-off from St. Joseph, Mo. is set for 12:00 p.m. on September 8.
