September 29, 2019-Emporia State opened up MIAA play with a 2-1 win at Fort Hays State on a very windy Sunday in Hays, Kan.

Going against a stiff wind,
Mackenzie Dimarco gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the 11
th minute when she took a cross from
Gaby Crowell and beat the Tiger keeper in the lower left corner of the goal.

Tanna Benefiel made it 2-0 when she headed in a goal off a corner kick from
Joanie Westcoat in the 73
rd minute.Â

Darby Hirsch was able to cut the lead in half on a penalty kick for Fort Hays State with 4:55 remaining but Emporia State was able to close out the match to open MIAA play with a win.

The Hornets outshot the Tigers 11-5 with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. For the game Emporia State had six corner kicks with a 5-0 advantage in the second half.

After playing seven of their first eight matches on the road Emporia State will return to the ESU Pitch on Friday, October 4 to take on Missouri Western. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
