HORNETS FALL IN FIRST TURNPIKE TUSSLE OF THE SEASON

Emporia State falls 3-1 at Washburn

September 22, 2019-Emporia State outshot Washburn 16-11 and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks but the Ichabods found the net more often in a 3-1 Hornet loss.

Washburn scored first when Olivia Grasso scored off a free kick from 40 yards out snuck in just under the cross bar in the 16th minute.  The Ichabods took a 2-0 lead when Grasso's free kick was blocked by Hornet keeper Jillian Patton and Paige Ledesma was in position to put in the rebound.

The deficit grew to 3-0 in the 60th minute when Grasso scored on a break away after the Hornets failed to convert on back to back corner opportunities.

Emporia State got on the board with 7:10 left when Daniela Cardona lofted a kick over a Washburn defender and Mackenzie Dimarco was able to beat the keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

The Hornets outshot the Ichabods 16-11 on the match and had eight corners to just one for Washburn. Emporia State keeper Jillian Patton was shook up on a play in front of the goal in the 40th and was replaced by Tori Bailey for 20 minutes until she was injured on the Ichabods third goal.

Emporia State will continue their string of seven of their first eight matches on the road when they travel to Neb.-Kearney on Friday, September 27.  Kick-off at Cope Stadium in Kearney, Neb. is set for 5:30 p.m.

NOTES
First Emporia State loss to Washburn since October 30, 2015, snaps five game winning streak and six game unbeaten streak against the Ichabods.
Mackenzie Dimarco's five goals are the most in the first six games of a season by a Hornet since Amelie Heun scored seven in her first six games of 2015 and matches Brandie Booth (2002) for the most goals by a Hornet in her first six career games.
