INTO THE MOUNTAINS
Emporia State travels to Colorado Springs for the Mountain Lion Classic. After playing two ranked teams last weekend they will take on three squads that made the NCAA Tournament last year with two of them receiving votes in this week's national poll.

THE COACHES
Bing Xu is in his 15th year as head coach for Emporia State. He holds a record of 284-170 and has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances.
Chrissy Elder is 85-84 in her seventh year at UC-Colorado Springs.
Chuck Waddington is 278-101 in his 12th season at Angelo State. 8 straight NCAA
Jane Sargent is 259-72 in her 11th Division II season at Ark.-Ft. Smith after starting the program as a junior college in 1998.
Jamie Magalei is 259-88 in her 12th year at Colo. School of Mines. 10 straight NCAA

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State went 3-1 at the Washburn Invitational with a win over then #18 Drury. The lone loss was to #23 Central Washington. Yuchen Du and Aliyah Bernard were named to the All-Tournament team.  Du is fourth in the MIAA with 3.50 kills per set while Mikayla Simons is sixth in blocks at 0.93 per set.
 
MIAA OPENING WEEKEND
The MIAA went 33-11 on the opening weekend of play. Four teams are nationally ranked in this week's AVCA National Poll with another receiving votes.

SCOUTING UC-COLORADO SPRINGS
The host Mountain Lions are 1-3 this year after going 12-15 last season. As a team they are hitting .181 with 12.12 kills per set. Taylor Smith has a team best 2.62 killsper set. Emporia State leads the all-time series 3-0.

SCOUTING ANGELO STATE
The Belles went 4-0 to open the season after going 22-10 and making their eighth straight NCAA Tourney last season. As a team they are hitting .229 with 11.93 kills per set. Haley Coulter is leading the Lone Star Conference with 0.93 aces per set. Emporia State leads the all-time series 5-3.

SCOUTING ARK.-FT. SMITH
The Lions are 3-1 with a win over MIAA associate member Newman. They were 20-12 and made the NCAA Tournament last season. Anna Dermer is averaging 3.38 kills per set to lead the team. Ark.-Ft. Smith won the only previous meeting in five sets during the 2015 season in St. Charles, Mo.

SCOUTING COLORADO MINES
The Orediggers are 3-1 on the season after going 24-6 and making their tenth straight NCAA Tournament last year. Abby Tiesman is averaging 3.50 kills per set and hitting .374 on the year. This is the first meeting between the two.

UP NEXT
The Hornets open MIAA play against #8 Neb.-Kearney on Friday, September 20. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in White Auditorium.
