July 10, 2019-While it is true that most NCAA student-athletes will go pro in something other than sports, several recent Emporia State graduates are the exception to the rule.
Former Lady Hornets Kelly Moten and Merissa Quick are playing for the Wisconsin GLO of the Global Women's Basketball Association. The GWBA is in it's fourth year and consists of teams in Oshkosh, Wis., Flint, Mich., St. Louis, Mo. and Nashville, Tenn. The GLO are currently undefeated and can clinch the GWBA regular season title with a win on Saturday against Flint.
Moten and Quick were teammates at Emporia State for two years, including the Lady Hornets trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2015.
Moten is in her third season as a professional after playing for Riva Basket in Switzerland and Frieburg in Germany. She is averaging 6.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. She had a season high 14 points against St. Louis as the GLO is averaging 99.5 points per game with 15 of the 16 players that have suited up this season have scored at least nine points in a game.
"It's been a great experience playing for the GLO this summer," said Moten. "Playing in a new place can be a challenge at times, but having great teammates whose main focus is to win, get better, and have fun can create an environment that anyone would want to be in and makes it easier."
Quick returns to the United States after playing in four different countriesover the last four seasons. She has played in Portugal, Australia, Turkey, and Britain after an All-American career with the Lady Hornets. She averaged 18.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for Cardiff in the Women's British Bas in 2017-18She is averaging 3.1 points and 2.5 rebounds pergame with a season high 16 points against the Music City Icons in Nashville, Tenn.
"Playing professionally has honestly been a dream come true," said Quick. "I've been able to play all over and see places and cultures I never would've even imagined." Â
Moten was the 2017 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) DII Player of the Year and finished her Lady Hornets career ranked third in career scoring, fifth in assists and steals, and ninth in blocked shots.
"Being a Lady Hornet helped me in many ways," said Moten. "I learned what it meant to work hard and be apart of a sisterhood that'll always be there when I need them. I learned more things about myself than I can even imagine and got pushed to limits I didn't know were there."
Quick holds the Emporia State record for blocked shots, and ended her career ranked fourth in rebounding and seventh in scoring in Lady Hornet history.
"I'm so thankful to Emporia State," said Quick. "Not only for helping me be able to play basketball at this level but also developing as a person capable of traveling the world and connecting with people everywhere I go."
