April 17, 2019-The Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams picked up wins on Tuesday at Lindenwood and in the process locked down their positions in the MIAA Tournament. The men won 5-2 to secure their spot in the tourney while the women won 7-0 and locked up the sixth seed.
The Hornet men had to battle from behind to get the win after dropping two of the three doubles matches. Charles Gortzounian and Taylor Nelson won their match 6-2 at #2 for the only win in doubles play. They both picked up three set wins in singles action with Gortzounian winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 at #1 and Nelson picking up a 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 win at #3 singles. Lukas Winkler won 6-4, 7-5 at #4 singles, Andy Graf came out on top 6-4, 7-5 at #5, and Luis Mai won 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) at #6 after the match had been clinched.
The Emporia State women swept the winless Lions, who were playing with only five players, 7-0 to secure the sixth seed in the MIAA Tourney. Jessica Purdy and Silvana Caceres won 6-1 at #1 doubles while Cyrielle Peyroche and Karen Santiago won at #2 doubles 6-2. Camila Ramos and Viktoria Mackova won in a walkover at #3 doubles. Singles play began with Santiago getting the walkover win at #6 and Peyroche getting a win when her opponent withdrew. Purdy then took a 6-0, 6-3 win at #2 and Caceres followed with a 7-6, 6-0 win at #5 singles. Ramos and Mackova both went three sets before pulling out wins, Ramos 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at #1 singles and Mackova 6-2, 7-6, 1-0 (10-4) at #3.
Both teams are scheduled to play at Newman on April 18 in Wichita to wrap up the regular season before starting the MIAA Tournament on April 26 in Oklahoma City.
