April 18, 2019-In their last competition before the MIAA Tournament, both the Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams were edged by Newman on Thursday afternoon in Wichita.

Shannen Meyer and Viktoria Mackova picked up the only win in doubles with a 6-3 victory at #3 as the Hornets trailed 1-0 going to singles play where four of the six matches went to a third set tiebreaker.

Cyrielle Peyroche won 6-4, 6-3 at #3 singles while Jessica Purdy and Mackova each picked up wins in tiebreakers. Purdy won 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 at #1 while Mackova won 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 at #2 singles. Those were not enough though as Silvana Caceres and Meyer each dropped third set tiebreakers. Caceres fell 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 at #5 and Meyer lost 6-1, 5-7, 10-4 at #6. Karen Santiago played up at #4 singles and lost 6-1, 6-3.

The Hornet men lost at #2 and #3 doubles to drop the doubles point and with rain moving in the #1 match was left unfinished with ESU trailing 4-3.

Emporia State won the top three singles matches with Charles Gortzounian winning 7-6, 6-3 at #1, while Gerard Pont and Taylor Nelson each won in three sets. Pont won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 at #2 as Nelson picked up a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at #3 singles. Lukas Winkler lost 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles and Luis Maia fell 6-4, 6-3 at #6. Andy Graf was trailing 6-3, 3-6, 3-2 when he retired as Newman earned the 4-3 win.

The Emporia State women earned the sixth seed at the MIAA Tournament and will take on third seeded Northwest Missouri on Thursday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the OKC Tennis Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Hornet men got the fourth and final spot in the tournament and will play top seeded Southwest Baptist at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27 in Oklahoma City.
