March 31, 2019-Five Emporia State pitchers gave up 17 hits in a 12-1, seven inning loss to #11Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Starter Jake Barton gave up three hits and a walk to open the game, but was able to hold the damage to just one run thanks to a bases loaded double play and a fly out.Â

Aaron Dees and Lou Pener were both hit by a pitch in the second inning with one out. The both stole bases to get into scoring position but were stranded due to a strikeout and a pop out to end the inning.

The Lions got a three run home run from Matt Miller to highlight a four run third inning and take a 5-0 lead.

Missouri Southern blew the game open with six runs on six hits and a Hornet error in the fourth inning.  Miller again had the big hit, this time a two run double to make it 8-0 before taking an 11-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.Â

Emporia State got their first hit with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Lou Pener singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before being stranded there to end the inning.

The Hornets broke a 16 inning scoreless string in the fifth inning. Chris Roduner ledoff with a walk and Josh Norlin was hit by a pitch before Brian Grove singled to load the bases. Paul Claassen hit a sac fly to plate Roduner but the inning ended with a double play.

Southern answered with a run in the top of the sixth to go up 12-1 and neither team would get arunner on the rest of the way as the Lions picked up the run rule win in seven innings.

Emporia State will try to salvage the final game of the series on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
