EMPORIA STATE BASEBALL TAKES SERIES FROM #18 CENTRAL OKLAHOMA WITH 4-3 WIN

Hornets get quality starting pitching in all three games of series

March 17, 2019-Emporia State captured a 4-3 win over #18 Central Oklahoma on Sunday and take the three game series from the Bronchos.

The Hornets got their third straight quality start as Ryan Lee allowed only one run in 6.0 innings with six strikeouts while giving up seven hits.  After striking out the first two batters, Lee allowed a single, a walk and hit a batter to load the bases.  He got out of it with his third strikeout of the inning.  He gave up a lead off double to Paul Kropf to start the bottom of the second but Josh Norlin was able to get him out at third on a fielders' choice. Ryan Harrell then reached on an infield single to put two on with just one out.  Lee then settled down, getting an pop up to short and grounder to second to end the inning.  He would go on to retire 14 of the next 16 batters he faced.

Offensively Lou Penner got Emporia State on the board with a solo home run in the fourth inning.  That would be the only scoring until the seventh inning.  Tyrus Barclay reached on a one out single and was replaced by pinch runner Brett Huelsmann.  With two outs, Brian Grove and Paul Claassen were both hit by pitch to load the bases.  Cooper Minnick delivered a two out double to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

Lee took the mound to start the seventh and gave up back to back singles before being relieved by Drew Scrimsher.  The Hornets turned a 463 double play before Dru Barrier reached on an infield single to get the Bronchos on the board.  Emporia State answered with an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Arron Dees doubled with one out and Tanner Arst followed with an RBI single up the middle.

TK McWhertor led off the bottom of the ninth with a double for UCO and would score one out later on Brock Ruminer's home run to pull the Bronchos within a run.  Scrimsher got a comebacker to the mound and a flyout to end the game and pick up the three inning save for the Hornets.

Minnick was two for five with a double and two RBI while Penner went one for four with a solo home run.  Scrimsher went 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits to earn his first save.

The Hornets are scheduled to play host to Oklahoma Christian in a double header on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Trusler Sports Complex.
