TURNPIKE TUSSLE
The Hornets begin Washburn Week with a trip to Topeka for this year's second Turnpike Tussle volleyball match up against the third ranked Ichabods. It is the first of three contests between Emporia State and Washburn this week with the Ichabods traveling down the turnpike on Friday for soccer and Saturday for football.
LAST ROTATION
Emporia State suffered their third straight sweep in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 loss at Missouri Western on Saturday night.
The Griffons used a 5-1 run to end the first set and turn a 20-17 set into a 25-18 win.
The Hornets jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set and led by a point before Western went on a 6-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. They would later score six straight points before ESU fought off two set points in a 25-17 MWSU win to go up 2-0.
The third set saw Western go on an 8-2 run to turn a 9-9 tie into a 17-12 lead. They would then finish the match on another 8-2 run to win 25-14 and sweep the set.
Jessica Hayes had ten kills on .308 hitting while
Yuchen Du added nine kills and six digs.Â
Emma Dixon had 31 assists on 36 Hornet kills while
Rylie Fornelli had 21 digs in the three sets.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is in his 15th year as head coach for Emporia State. He holds a record of 286-185 and has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances. He is 8-23 against Washburn.
Chris Herron is 523-105 in his 18th season as head coach at Washburn and has a career record of 598-134 in his 21st year as a four year collegiate coach. He is 28-10 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 5-16, 1-12 in the MIAA. A total of 11 of their 19 opponents were ranked or received votes in the AVCA National Poll.
Emma Dixon is seventh in the MIAA in assists and needs 37 assists to move into the top five all-time at Emporia State.
Aliyah Bernard is sixth in the MIAA in hitting percentage,

SCOUTING WASHBURN
The Ichabods are 19-2, 11-2 in the MIAA and lead the league in assists, kills and aces. Taylor Antonowich leads the league in aces while Allison Sadler is first in the MIAA in assists. Genna Berg ranks second in kills and Faith Rottinghaus is third in digs in the MIAA.
SERIES HISTORY
The Hornets lead the all-time series 64-41 however Washburn has won 19 of the last 20 meetings.
LAST TIME VS. THE ICHABODS
Emporia State took fifth ranked Washburn to extra points in the third set but could not pull off the upset in a 25-17, 25-16, 28-26 loss in White Auditorium.
Aliyah Bernard led Emporia State with six kills, six block assists and a solo block while
Mikayla Simons had seven kills on .500 hitting with a block assist and a solo block.Â
Rylie Fornelli had a team high ten digs with five coming in the third set when she moved to libero. The Hornets only had 11 attack errors compared to 21 in the match for the Ichabods but ESU only converted on 28 kills compared to 50 for Washburn.

The Hornets return to White Auditorium for four of their final six matches starting with Newman on Friday, November 1. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
