EMPORIA STATE SOCCER AND NEWMAN BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE

Hornets extend unbeaten string at home to 15 matches

October 20, 2019-Emporia State saw their home winning streak come to an end at 14 matches but were able to extend their home unbeaten streak to 15 matches with a 1-1 tie against Newman on Sunday afternoon at the ESU Pitch.

Emporia State got on the board just 2:27 into the match when Hannah Woolery sent a cross to Aislinn Hughes who dropped the shot into the lower left hand corner of the goal from less than five yards out.  With a steady wind at their backs the Hornets would continue to press the issue in the first half, out shooting the Jets 7-1, but the score remained 1-0 going to the half.

The numbers reversed in the second half as the teams switched sides and Emporia State was going against the wind.  Newman had a 9-3 advantage on shots in the second 45 minutes including a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.  It looked like the Hornets would survive the onslaught unscathed until Kyra Butler took a free kick from outside the box on the left side and found Kennedy Weaver on the back side five yards out and she was able tie the match with 5:00 left in the match.

Emporia State had the wind to start the first overtime and could not get a shot off while Newman got off four with two on goal.  Emporia State's Mackenzie Dimarco got a break away off a goal kick midway through the second overtime and her shot from the top of the box just missed the upper right hand corner.

For the match Newman outshot Emporia State 18-11 although the Hornets had a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Emporia State is back in action on October 25 when they travel to Missouri Southern.  Kick off from Hal Bodon Field in Joplin, Mo. is set for 6:00 p.m.
