#23 LADY HORNETS FALL IN 2OT TURNPIKE TUSSLE BATTLE

Lady Hornets fell 96-88 to Washburn

January 5, 2019-In another instant classic in White Auditorium, the #23 Lady Hornet women's basketball team fell 96-88 to Washburn in double overtime on Saturday.
 
The Ichabods got on the board first with a layup at the 8:41 mark in the first quarter. The Lady Hornets answered with 7:29 on the clock before the teams scored back-and-forth to the media timeout at 4:28. Out of the timeout, the Lady Hornets went on a 14-4 run to end the quarter with a 22-16 lead.
 
Emily Miller hit a three to open the second quarter and extend Emporia States lead to 25-16 with 9:01 left in the half. The Lady Hornets took their largest lead of the half when Morgan Laudan knocked down a jumper to put them up 40-26 with 2:27 left in the half. Emporia State would take a 42-32 lead into the break at half.
 
The Lady Hornets had a slow start to the second half and would allow the Ichabods to bring their lead down to 50-45 at the media timeout with 4:42 left in the third quarter. After holding the lead since the 2:37 mark in the first quarter, the Lady Hornets relinquished the lead with 0:43 left in the third quarter. Washburn would lead 59-55 heading into the fourth.
 
Teams scored back-and-forth throughout the fourth quarter with neither team leading by more than six points. With the game tied at 73, the Ichabod's Taylor Blue broke the tie with 0:07 left in regulation when she hit a long three. After a 30 second timeout by the Lady Hornets, Emporia State's Emily Miller knocked down a game tying three as time expired to force overtime.
 
The overtime period saw four tie scores and two lead changes as the Lady Hornets took the lead at 83-82 with 1:10 on the clock. Washburn's Hunter Bentley knocked down a three with 0:58 left to regain the 85-83 lead. With 0:41 remaining in overtime, Addie Lackey scored on a layup to tie the game at 85 which would hold to force a second overtime.
 
Washburn's Reagan Phelan hit a three just 15 seconds into the second overtime which would give the Ichabods the final lead for good. The Lady Hornets came within one at 88-87 before the Ichabods finished the game on an 8-1 run to take the 96-88 win.
 
The Lady Hornets were led by Emily Miller, who recorded a double-double with her 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tyra Jones led the Lady Hornets with 24 points followed by Jessica Wayne with 17 and Miller with 16.

The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Wednesday, January 9 as they travel to Maryville, Mo. to take on Northwest Missouri.
 
Game Notes:
With her 10 points, Addie Lackey passed Aneta Kausaite to take over 19th on the Lady Hornets all-time scoring list. She now has 1,252 total points at Emporia State.
This was just the fifth time in series history that the Turnpike Tussle has been decided in overtime periods. The last overtime decision was an ESU 61-59 win in White Auditorium during the 2010-11 season. The only other 2OT decision in series history was an ESU 78-76 win in Lee Arena in the 2003-04 season.
Since the 1997-98 season, this is just the fourth game in which the Lady Hornets have scored 80+ points in a loss. They are now 291-4 (.986) when scoring at least 80 points in that span.
