LADY HORNETS PULL AWAY LATE FOR 76-61 WIN AT MISSOURI SOUTHERN

Emporia State has four of five starters in double figures

January 26, 2019-Emporia State outscored Missouri Southern by 20 points in the second half on a the way to a 76-61 Lady Hornet victory on Saturday in Joplin, Mo.
 
The Lady Hornets led 10-7 midway through the first quarter when the Lions went on a 9-3 run to take a 16-13 lead with 1:31 left in the period.  Emporia State scored the final four points to take a 17-16 lead after one.
 
Addie Lackey scored the first four points for Emporia State to start the second quarter as the Lady Hornets led 21-18 with 8:41 left.  The Lions then went on a 10-0 run to take a 28-21 lead with 5:48 left in the half.  Southern would lead by eight at 37-29 with 2:40 left but the Lady Hornets would end the half on a 4-1 mini-run.  Lackey would score on a break away layup at the buzzer to bring Emporia State within 38-33 at the break.
 
The Lions hit six of nine three-point attempts in the first half while the Lady Hornets turned it over 14 times leading to 16 Missouri Southern points.
 
Emporia State trailed 44-37 with 7:20 left when they went on an 8-0 run to take a 45-44 lead with 5:36 left as Jessica Wayne scored the final six points of the run.  MSSU scored with 5:18 left to break the run but the Lady Hornets responded with a 13-2 run to end the quarter and take a 58-48 lead into the fourth.
 
Southern cut the lead to 65-59 with 5:07 left when Wayne pulled a defensive rebound and went the length of the court to give the Lady Hornets a 67-59 lead at the final media timeout.  With ESU leading by eight Kali Martin hit a three-pointer to push the lead to double digits with 3:33 left and then connected on two free throws with 3:09 left to make it 72-59.  Lackey would score on a fast break layup with 2:09 left and Tyra Jones scored inside with 1:36 remaining to finish an 11-0 run and give the Lady Hornets a 76-59 lead.
 
Jessica Wayne led four Hornets in double figures with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Addie Lackey and Tyra Jones each scored 14 points and Tiana Moala added 13 points, nine rebounds and six blocks.
 
The Lady Hornets will return to White Auditorium on Thursday, January 31 to take on Lindenwood.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
