September 18, 2018- Emporia State Volleyball fell 3-1 on Tuesday to #21 ranked Washburn in the first Turnpike Tussle meeting of the 2018 season. The Hornets forced a fourth set against the Ichabods for just the fifth time this season.
The Ichabods took control of the match early, jumping out to a 10-3 lead in set one. The Hornets were unable to close the gap closer than six points as the Ichabods went on to win set one 25-13. The Hornets fought back in set two keeping the score close up to 11-9 before the Ichabods went on a 10-4 run to take a 21-13 lead. The Hornets made a short run but were unable to overcome the deficit and fell 25-19 in set two.
Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Hornets kept set three close to a tie score at 16-16 before making a 4-1 run to take the lead at 20-17. The Hornets went on to clench the set win 25-20 and hand the Ichabods just their fifth set loss of the season. In set four, the Ichabods opened up on an 11-3 run. The Hornets were unable to regain momentum as the Ichabods went on to win set four 25-17 and the match 3-1.
The Hornets were led by Yuchen Du who recorded a triple-double with ten kills, 14 assists and 12 digs. Tatum Graves joined Du in double digit kills with ten while the Hornets had four players with double digit digs. Allie Maloney had a team high 18 digs while Jordan Evans had 13, Du had 12 and Taylor Otting had 11. Emma Dixon led the Hornets with 26 assists in the match.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, September 21 as they travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on #13 Central Missouri.
