April 29, 2018- Emporia State Baseball took game three 5-2 to complete the sweep over Northeastern State. The Hornets used ten hits and one RiverHawks error to get the win on Senior Day.

After exchanging outs in the first inning the Hornets got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the second. Kaden Shaffer led off the inning for the Hornets with a double to left center field and advanced to third as Trevor Turner grounded out to the first baseman. Shaffer scored on a sacrifice fly to the left fielder from Kyle Lopez to put the Hornets up 1-0 over the RiverHawks.

In the bottom of the third the Hornets extended their lead with one run on three hits. Brian Grove started things off for the Hornets with a single up the middle and advanced to second as Mack Gowing was walked. Bryce Fischer drove Grove home with a single through the left side to give the Hornets the 2-0 lead before finishing the third inning.

The Hornets extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on four hits. Turner led off the inning for the Hornets with a walk and stole second before Tate Kastens drove him home with his second home run of the season to take the 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth the Hornets took advantage of one RiverHawk error to extend the lead to 5-0 after five. Turner got on base with a walk and stole second then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Lopez walked. Tyler Harris came in to pinch run for Lopez. Harris stole second and Turner came home for the score on a throwing error by the catcher.

In the top of the seventh the RiverHawks got on the board with two runs on three hits to bring the score within 5-2 and finish scoring for the game.

The Hornets had ten hits in the game led by Kaden Shaffer with three hits in four at bats. Brian Grove and Bryce Fischer each added two hits while Mack Gowing, Tate Kastens and Brandon Bachar each added one hit.

Taylor Thompson started on the mound for the Hornets pitching six innings allowing just two hits with three K's. Jacob Tetuan came in to pitch 1.0 inning in the seventh allowing two runs on three hits with one K. Layne Downing came in for the eighth inning and retired the RiverHawks with seven pitches before Nathan Gieber came in for the final inning allowing just one hit and no runs.

The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, May 4 as they travel to St. Charles, Mo. to take on Lindenwood in a three-game series to wrap up the regular season.
